Second Elk Calf

The second elf calf of the season was captured on Sunday at the Elk & Bison Prairie - his mom had been in the same area for several days, but this little one was hidden really well.
He has been tagged #905 - will be fun to track his growth in the next few years. He was injected with a small tracking device, and had at least 50-60 ticks removed.

They are a big problem in the prairie - I even managed to take a few home with me. But it was worth it - how many times do you get to touch a baby elk?

They tried to get him up and moving around, but he was very content to stay put where his mom left him.

Of course, this post wouldn't be complete without wildflowers - bees were all over the sweet peas today.

Found this little guy in a small puddle right beside the road just across from Devil's Elbow - didn't even get out of the car - now that's lazy!! I'm not into frogs/toads, but he had beautiful coloring......the picture doesn't do him justice.

A Trip To The North End

Had to cross a fence to get a good shot of this water lily at the Nature Station, someone squealed on me, but the shot was worth it! :-)

This red variety was just beginning to open - they are pretty, but the yellow ones are my favorite.

Looks like this frog has been hiding under the moss for a while now.

Leather vase vine

Forgot to ask what this plant was - it was just beginning to bloom in the pond.

It was a beautiful summer day, the sky and water were soooo blue - was sorry to be leaving LBL.

Memorial Day Weekend

Wasn't hard to find a lot of "blooming things" this weekend - the highlight of the week was this hedge bind weed.......doesn't look like much, but I've never been able to find it in LBL, so it was quite a treat.

Sampson's Snakeroot is blooming along The Trace on the north side.

Glad to see lots of columbo this year too - it must like all the rain we've had this spring.

It's a little hard to see, but there is a huge green dragon in the middle of this picture - found it on the south side of Fort Henry Drive.

Blue vervain is easy to spot along the roadsides - the sunlight didn't do the colors justice, the blooms are a very pretty blue.

This moth mullien wasn't in full bloom, but I didn't want to miss it - the yellow versions are my favorite.

Beardtongue
I've heard the mountain laurel is blooming right now, just haven't had time to check it out.......real life has been getting in the way of my outdoor adventures - am hoping things get back to normal soon. I know those ticks are missing me! :-)

LBL Waterfall & Wildflowers

They said there were no waterfalls in LBL, but I kept looking for one anyway - finally found it!! It's not very big, only drops about 3 feet, but it was still a neat find on Redd Hollow Road. With the rains we had today, it should be around for another week or two at least.

Here is the yellow version of wood betony

Another very rare treat - a white trillium!

Shooting Stars

A morel mushroom - found dozens growing less than a foot from the road - who says they are only under a grove of trees??

Fire Pink

Dwarf Larkspur

Bluets
Ticks are out in great numbers again this year - be prepared!
